October 14, 2009 - Mystery of the Monarch
Join Annick Nash, CH2 head teacher, and Thelma Dooley, retired CH1 teacher, for an evening exploring the life cycle of the monarch butterflies. Both teachers have raised and released monarch butterflies in their classrooms. They also participated in a penpal program with two schools in New York and Canada during the 2008/2009 school year. Annick and Thelma were awarded fellowships from the Monarch Teacher Network to visit the best known monarch colonies of El Rosario and Sierra Chincua in the Transvolcanic Mountains in the state of Michoacan, Mexico. They will share some pictures of their trip as well as ways to raise monarchs with children. Monarch Teacher Network (MTN) is an emerging network of American, Canadian, and Mexican teachers who are bringing Monarch butterflies into classrooms and communities. But MTN is teaching more than Monarchs: it's an exploration of the past, present and future of North America and its people. The goal of MTN is to take care of Monarchs, people....and the land that sustains us all. Over five hundred teachers participated in workshops throughout the US and Canada this past summer. From the Journeys and Transformations dvd that will be available to purchase at the workshop, "They say it takes a village to raise a child. When the village is a big as North America...or the planet...perhaps it takes a butterfly...a Monarch butterfly...to bring the village together”. Children and Parents of children ages: 12 months through high school.
November 4, 2009 - Montessori at Home
Caroline Moulsdale has been a Children's House head teacher for 8 years and has been the Parent Education Director for three years. The Montessori at Home Program helps to bridge the gap between a child's time at home with their time at HMS by helping parents create consistency between what the child has learned in school with what the child does at home. This will help create smoother transitions from one school year to the next and help your child achieve greater independence and respect. This session will include a guide to help you get started, age appropriate activities to include in your home, discipline techniques, and a question and answer session. Parents of children ages: Birth through High School. No childcare available.
January 13, 2010 - Math Curriculum Night
We will have teachers from each age level here to show the math sequence from Toddler through Middle school. Informational tables from each age level will be set up in the library. Families will be able to see materials and ask questions about our math curriculum. You can invite friends that do not attend Montessori for an informative evening.
