The Hockessin Montessori School is accredited by The National Wildlife Federation as an official Schoolyard Habitat. The Hockessin Montessori School is dedicated to the creation and restoration of wildlife habitats.
Our students have been integral partners in the development of several wildlife habitats on our campus. They have applied their knowledge to the design and creation of these areas.
Schoolyard Habitats meet the needs of wildlife by providing the four critical habitat components: food, water, shelter, and places to raise young. It addresses the needs of the botanical world by focusing on native versus invasive plants. This project offers many benefits to our students and educators including enhanced hands-on interdisciplinary learning opportunities, on-site "field trips," the establishment of ties within the community and the development of a sense of empowerment and environmental stewardship.
Our Schoolyard Habitat project, to date, comprises several key areas. The first is our central Courtyard Habitat. Developed primarily by our fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students, this area offers a haven for learning. In addition to our Courtyard Habitat, each classroom has its own themed garden designed, planted, and maintained by the students.
Each year HMS supplements the Schoolyard Habitat project by organizing a unit of study for the entire school. Toddler through Middle School students focus on one curricular area, developing and implementing new materials that are shared throughout the school. Elementary and Middle School students offer lessons to the younger children. Past topics have included insects, birds, and wildflowers. Each year the study ends with our annual Garden Day. Students, faculty, and parents participate in an entire day dedicated to the observance of plants and animals. A Grand Opening Ceremony is followed by games and activities for all ages; and the day culminates with the planting of annuals and perennials throughout the school campus.
