Dr. Montessori believed that the first three years of life are the most fundamental in the development of human beings and their potential.  The Toddler environment is a nurturing place for children to begin what Dr. Montessori referred to as their  "education for life."

The Hockessin Montessori School offers placement in Toddler classrooms, each Toddler classroom is directed by a teacher and an assistant.  All of The Hockessin Montessori School's Head Teachers are certified by the American Montessori Society.

Toddlerhood is a critical time when the child forms the basis of his/her personality, develops the ability to solve problems on his/her own, and establishes basic trust in self, others, and the world.  Our environment provides opportunities for learning cause and effect relationships about the real world through exploration and experimentation.  Care of self, large and fine motor activities, nature walks, gardening, music and books are all important components in the program.  Socially, toddlers are learning to work alongside each other in a nurturing environment that encourages concentration and independence and in an environment that respects the toddler's curious and joyful spirit.

The materials and lessons are presented in an attractive, inviting manner and in simplicity to ensure success.  All materials are appropriately child-sized to ease manipulation.  Concepts are presented, progressing in difficulty, as the year ensues; hence, the classroom grows with the child and his/her developmental readiness.
