The Elementary Program at Hockessin Montessori School combines students into an environment reminiscent of the "one room" schoolhouse. Our teachers endeavor to truly educate, by drawing out the discovery of concepts and information, rather than spoon feeding this information to the child. The emphasis is placed on the process of learning, rather than the product. We encourage independent thinking and each child's unique curiosity about learning. We strive for our children to be good problem solvers; to learn how to learn.
The curriculum is an integrated, multi-faceted approach to education. Students work at their individual levels in mathematics and in various aspects of the language curriculum.
Small group presentations are used for Cultural subjects such as history and geography and for Science subjects such as botany, zoology, chemistry, and astronomy. Students are informally assessed throughout the school year in order for the teacher to continue presenting material that is appropriate for the individual child's level.
Students in the Elementary Program continue to use the Montessori manipulative materials, however, are now moving more readily from concrete to abstract reasoning. When a student is ready for abstract work, the materials are removed.
Students in the Elementary Program are expected to become increasingly responsible for their own education. Continued joy in learning, self-discipline in one's work, organization of one's time, respect for classmates and participation in the community of the classroom, the wider school, and the larger community are all hallmarks of success in the Montessori Elementary aged child.
